The city of Crest is famous for its dungeon; culminating at 52 meters, it is France’s tallest. This tower is the only remains of an imposing castle destroyed by Louis XIII, who found it potentially dangerous. The tower part having been spared, served as a prison which successively housed libertines, Protestants during the wars of religion, and opponents of Louis Napoléon Bonaparte’ coup d’état.
